Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
